GDOT’s current proposal for Highway 20 would replace the current 2-lane highway with a 6- to 9-lane highway with a 20-foot concrete median and concrete ditches on either side, displacing over 250 homes and businesses. While we recognize that safety concerns exist with the current highway and that development is inevitable, we believe that the current proposal:
- Physically divides the communities of Buffington, Macedonia, Lathemtown, Free Home, and Ducktown, as well as other rural communities along the highway;
- Encourages rapid and dense development that is inconsistent with the character of rural Cherokee and Forsyth counties;
- Endangers residents and commuters with the introduction of additional traffic, including tractor trailers; and
- Introduces environmental concerns, including air and noise pollution, and significant loss of wetland habitats.
